We love Portugal but this year we thought we'd add a twist.
So here we are on Madeira, a slice of Portugal off the northwest coast of Africa.
We're based in the capital, Funchal, at the 3-star Hotel Orquidea – it's a perfect position from which to explore the island.
And we're well fed, great service and enjoy the friendly hospitality.A big thumbs-up for the Hotel Orquidea and Funchal – our Madeira-moment might have a lasting effect.Local TipsOrquidea is an easy walk into town and attractions such as the Museu do Vinho and Monte Palace Tropical Gardens are only a couple of hundred metres awayFood, Drink and EntertainmentWe'd have no problem eating here all the time, lingering especially over the typical Madeira cuisine and the fresh seafood.
But it's only fair to sample the range of menus in town.
Same for the bar – sometimes we just mean to start there before into town, next, it's time for bed.
Some can (and do) party all night long in the numerous bars, clubs and discos – oh for our lost youth! But it's all in a fun atmosphere – everyone's friendly.ActivitiesHmm depends on your stamina.
We love the beaches and the countryside – nature-lovers really.
The walks are tremendous.
And the water has its temptations: diving, whale-watching, boat trips and coastal excursions.
Many sports; and the inevitable golf.Additional: Safety Deposit box (charge); Car park (charge); ; Mini-fridge (charge);
